About the profession of Health Informatics and Information Management
Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM) is a challenging career for people interested in medicine, technology and management.

HIM professionals are experts in managing the collection, storage, retrieval, analysis, and interpretation of healthcare data and information. To provide the highest quality healthcare delivery, healthcare information is used not only for patient care, but also for medical legal issues, reimbursement, research, planning, and evaluation. Opportunities for employment are found in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, home health agencies, health maintenance organizations, insurance agencies, governmental agencies, educational institutions, and research centers.

***Below is an overview of health informatics & information management programs in Jackson, MS. Students who attend the University of Mississippi in Oxford for their pre-requisites are not automatically admitted to the health informatics & information management program in Jackson. Admission is COMPETITIVE! Different health informatics & information management schools have different requirements.***


Bachelor’s route: The University of Mississippi Medical Center offer a 2 +2 program with two years of pre-requisites at the Oxford campus or other campus and the final two years of work is completed through an online program offered through the School of Health Related Professions at UMMC in Jackson, Mississippi. The program will allow students who are interested to become a HIIM professionals. The program is an online program that will prepare students to develop information systems for quality patient care; facility reimbursement; medical research; health planning; and health care evaluation as required by the changing health care environment.  With the exception of professional practice courses, all courses are delivered online.

Master’s route: UMMC also offers a master’s in HIIM, which  is an online program that will prepare students to develop information systems for quality patient care; facility reimbursement; medical research; health planning; and health care evaluation as required by the changing health care environment. Upon completion of the program, graduates will have a thorough knowledge of health care data resources administration, health care data security oversight, strategic and operational information resource planning, clinical data analysis, clinical classification systems, medical vocabularies, enterprise-wide master patient index systems, clinical decision support systems, information systems development and implementation of systems such as electronic health records. Two tracks in the MHIIM degree program allow students to emphasize health informatics or health information management. Additional electives taken in the Health Information Management track allow the student to pursue eligibility for the RHIA certification exam of the American Health Information Management Association.
