The Mississippi Beta Chapter of ALPHA EPSILON DELTA, a national honorary society for pre-health students, was chartered at the University of Mississippi in 1938.  The goals of the organization are to encourage and recognize scholastic excellence and leadership among students, to provide activities which support their career goals, and to serve the health care needs of the campus community.

Membership Levels and Requirements:

Full Member

  • Undergraduate Students:
    • Membership is open to students currently enrolled in chosen health professions including careers in medicine (allopathic and osteopathic), dentistry, optometry, podiatry, veterinary medicine and other health care professions requiring post baccalaureate study leading to an advanced degree.
    • Potential members must have completed at least 3 semesters or 5 quarters of health preprofessional studies work with an overall cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.00) and also with a cumulative GPA of 3.30 in the sciences – biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
    • Potential members who meet the GPA and are transferring from one school to one with an active chapter will be eligible for membership after the completion of one semester or two quarters at the new school. The grade point averages used to determine scholastic eligibility at the new school will be determined by averaging all grades from both old and new schools.

*Attend national conventions of AED
*Serve on chapter committees

*List AED on medical/dental school applications
*Be nominated for National AED scholarships

APPLYING FOR MEMBERSHIP:

The membership application may be downloaded from the HPAO website, printed, and completed by hand.  Submit the completed AED membership application, along with a current transcript, to the HPAO, Duff Center (4th Floor), Suite F

The GPA Calculation Worksheet calculator makes it easy to determine your numbers for your application.

AED officers and sponsor will review the application and evaluate the transcript.  Grades from all colleges attended should be reflected.  Applicant should assume acceptance if requirements are met.

If the applicant is invited to become a Full Member, you must be present at both the initiationDues are payable when application is made.  The national office of AED requires each initiate to complete a membership card.  In exchange the new member will receive a signed certificate.  The membership book is signed at the close of a brief initiation ceremony.  New members also receive verification from the national office.
