Health Professions Advising Office (HPAO)
University of Mississippi

Nimrat Kaur

Pre-Physician Assistant student from Madison, MS

Why did you decide to pursue this health profession? Since I was in elementary school, I have been passionate about a career in health care. Since pre-med is the first health profession that comes to mind, I was a pre-med student when I first enrolled at the university. However, it took me some time to determine which field of medical practice suited me and my desired way of life the most. During my semesters at the university, I came to the conclusion that I want to attend PA school. Overall, this career would enable me to live comfortably and maintain a healthy work-life balance. I want to succeed because I am passionate about this career.

Major: Nutrition and Dietetics : Health Emphasis

Why did you choose this major? My major is nutrition and dietetics with a health sciences emphasis. I chose my major because I didn’t think biology or chemistry would be a good fit for me. I became very interested in nutrition because it is so closely related to health care. Medicine is shifting toward preventative care, and providing our patients with the proper nutrition may save them from certain illnesses.

How has HPAO helped you on your pre-health journey? HPAO has assisted me in learning from my mistakes and in avoiding them in the future. HPAO has made certain that I take the appropriate classes each semester. In times of uncertainty, HPAO has guided me to success. HPAO has provided numerous opportunities for prospective students to meet with representatives from various professional schools in order to receive helpful application advice.

What is your most memorable HPAO experience? My most memorable experience with HPAO was during the summer before my freshman year. The advice I received that summer has stayed with me because my former advisor, Dr. Casey Stuart, assisted me in mapping out my four years of undergraduate school. Dr. Stuart made certain that I was aware of every class that was required of me, as well as that I was aware of the importance of participating in extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, and leadership positions. She provided me with a variety of opportunities and contacts. This made me feel very focused and career-driven as a freshman. I felt like someone was there for me academically.

What are your career goals? My professional ambitions are to apply to physician assistant schools during my senior year of college. This will allow me to strengthen my application as much as possible. I’m hoping to get accepted on my first try. I’d finish school in three years. Then I’d like to apply for a job in the Jackson metropolitan area. I want to gain experience so that I can get a good-paying job with flexible hours.

What are you the happiest doing? Whenever I am not studying, I like to watch The Walking Dead or play Call of Duty with my roommates. I also like to shop, and I like to dine at new restaurants.

What is your favorite study spot? Baxter Room or home

What is your favorite meal in Oxford? Jinsei Wings
