Rod’Kendrick Harrison

Pre-medical student from Batesville, Mississippi

Why did you decide to pursue this health profession? I’ve always wanted a career that gives me the opportunity to make people happier, feel better, and make a difference in their lives. Becoming a doctor and a researcher will provide me the opportunity to do just that. Being able to take care of one in their most vulnerable state is a testament to compassion and empathy and that is what I look for in a career.

Major: Public Health & Health Sciences

Why did you choose this major? I chose to major in Public Health because I began to understand how Public Health was a huge aspect of medicine as it related to the Social Determinants of Health. While medicine focuses on diagnosing and treating, public health focuses on broadly addressing the health of communities. I think with a public health background I have a better opportunity at achieving better health outcomes for individuals.

How has HPAO helped you on your pre-health journey? The HPAO has played a pivotal role in my success as a pre-medical student. From the moment I attend the HPAO orientation session to now the summer before my junior year, HPAO has provided guidance, support, and resources that have been invaluable to helping me succeed as a pre-medical student.

What is your most memorable HPAO experience? Mississippi Day 2022 & 2023 were both memorable experiences because it allows me to interact with fellow ambassadors and answer any questions from prospective students.

What are your career goals? Physician/Public Health Researcher

What are you the happiest doing? Playing tennis or running

What is your favorite study spot? Dungeon in the Honors College
