Health Professions (draft)

At the University of Mississippi, the Health Professions Advising Office will guide you towards your dream of becoming a health professional. Below are some introductory resources to begin your research into the health professions. In addition, the Explore Health Careers website provides information on a range of health professions. Public Health Online includes public health resources to those considering a career in public health or currently employed in the industry.

There are two major pathways for entering a health profession.

  • 2+ and 3+ programs in the allied health studies, whereby students spend 2 or 3 years (depending on the program) on the Oxford campus before applying for a competitive-entry allied health program at another campus to complete the degree work.  Students may also enter any 2+ or 3+ program with a four-year degree. These include: Dental HygieneHealth Informatics and Information Management, Histotechnology, Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Nursing, and Radiologic Sciences.  These students will be typically enrolled in the BA in Allied Health Studies degree program while at UM.
  • Some programs require a baccalaureate degree before entering professional school: DentistryMedicineOptometryPhysical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Veterinary Medicine, and many others.
